When thinking of “childhood”, the typical image that crosses your mind is that of innocent and joyous little ones playing, running, biking, flying their kites, screaming, driving their parents crazy and the sort, with the smile never escaping their faces.
There is a group of children, however, who are deprived of this type of innocent childhood. These are the Palestinian children living in refugee camps in Lebanon.
There is a story and a long road that every student in Palestine goes through to reach university.
This challenge is not only academic. Of course, students have to work hard in high school in order to be accepted and then double their efforts in the university as all students in the world must do, but this is only one part of the challenge.
In Palestine, the situation is different because of the Israeli occupation.
Three years ago, soon after the war on Gaza in late 2008 I heard about an initiative a few friends were about to undertake: a cycle from London to Paris in just a few days, to support medical needs in Gaza. I was tempted to join, not knowing enough about Gaza but tempted to cycle from London to Paris, with friends, and having that tied to a humanitarian cause made it all the more tempting. But I did not manage to go then.
A great leader and the founder of the Palestinian novel was killed today, thirty-nine years ago. Ghassan Kanafani and his young niece were brutally assassinated by the Israeli Mossad in broad daylight on July 8th 1972 in Beirut. At the age of 36, Ghassan Kanafani’s ideas, poetry, children’s books, novels and essays proved to be a threat to the Zionist regime.
